It’s Not Your Fault
Artist Statement
It’s Not Your Fault is an observational documentary about the ridiculous choices designers take that affect everyone’s lives. From the Type-G power outlets in the UK needing to be turned with a switch for them to work, to toothpaste tubes needing to be abused to get the last 10% that’s stuck between the furthest reach of your fingers and the start of the cap, it seems as if all these choices are made intentionally to fuck with you.
Generally, these choices are down to money. Toothpaste tubes are designed for you to throw them out before they’re actually empty, and supermarket baskets are intentionally uncomfortable to make you take a cart that can fit more things for you to buy. However, unintuitive doors and bad (or even worse, “clever”) signage aren’t real money savers, they’re just inconvenient for the sake of being inconvenient.
So, this documentary doesn't exist to offer a solution to these problems, it just serves as a way to highlight them so future designers, or current ones, can observe the flaws that everyday users of their products deal with so they can avoid the same mistakes in the future, hopefully.
